PARLEZ SESSIONS / HELLA

This summer, Parlez is busy joining forces with a selection of DJs, producers and musicians to bring you the Parlez Sessions, a series of mini mixes to soundtrack your summer.
Our fifth mix comes from Hella, a 140 and dubstep producer and DJ based in Bristol making serious moves in the scene. He also dabbles in MCing, loves a skate and is a talented model - check him in our new AW19 collection.
Get to know the man himself in our interview and hit play!

Thanks for joining us for Parlez Sessions! What's the vibe you've gone for in your mix?

Thanks for having me - In this mix I decided to go straight into the 140bpm spectrum, with some dub wise heavy hitters vs some trap-enriched dubstep.

This mix for me was just about having fun and surprising myself with blends I haven't done before....A few times I got a little too carried away in the studio but I hope that the mix translates the energy I was feeling at the time of recording it!

How did you get into the music scene?

I played violin for a while as kid, then at college I met my friend Hugh aka Hughdem, who I freestyled with. From there I made a few tracks with Hugh and performed with him at Joiners in Southampton in support for Akala.

I had always been interested in grime since I was about 7, and then dubstep once I got older, but back home there weren't many avenues for either genre.
Once I moved to Bristol and met my good friend and fellow producer Koma, I quickly realised what I had been missing out on!
From there I hosted a few nights as an emcee shortly after started producing and now DJing.

What have you got coming up next?

So far I've got 3 vinyl releases coming this year, starting with a release on Dub & Roll Records. This has been a long time coming but it's just around the corner and features my remix of Tenor Youthman's "Writing On The Wall".

Next up I have my debut EP releasing on Romulus Records which will include my track Bhavacakra & Ol' Faithful ft. Emz and 2 more tunes.

Then I'm releasing a track on vinyl for a new label, and I'll be DJing alongside the rest of the label family at the launch party. I can't say too much more, but all I can say is the line up is silly...

What's your favourite tune so far this year?

If we were talking between now and this time last year it would be between DE-TU - "Koshi" & Commodo - Bitch & Man.

Strictly speaking since January literally anything Cartridge makes. His new Snake Charmer EP is mad.

Aside from Parlez, what are your favourite brands?

My favourite brands are probably - Supreme, Carhartt, Nike, Polar, Yardsale, Crap Eyewear

I only wear Dickies & Levi trousers at the moment, honestly can't remember the last time I wore anything different, can never fault the quality.
